| Summary: |
Allergy is a state of
immunologically mediated hypersensitivity to a foreign
substance. For patients with refraction errors contact
lenses have become a comfortable and extremely popular
alternative to glasses. Due to advances in manufacturing
technologies, a comprehensive assortment of market
contact lenses is now available. Although the number of
contact lens wearers increases, complication rates go
down. The paper presents several issues related to
corneal response to contact lenses – among them the
incidence of adverse reactions and complications
resulting from mechanical irritation, unstable tear
film, metabolic disturbances, and inflammatory as well
as toxic-allergic reactions. Corneal lesions may develop
in any of its layers. Allergic reaction to hypoxia and
contact lenses care solutions most often results in
superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis. A reaction to
preservatives may cause superficial punctate keratitis.
However, allergy to contact lenses most frequently
presents as giant papillary conjunctivitis, which is an
iatrogenic allergic-mechanical disease. |
