| Summary: |
Orthokeratology is a
reversible clinical procedure to reduce myopia using
contact lenses which are made of high gas permeable
material with 4 curves reverse geometry shape.
Purpose: The aim of the paper was to evaluate the
central corneal thickness and radiuses of corneal
curvature during ortholenses use.
Material and methods: The studies have been
performed in 16 patients (32 eyes) aged 10-16 years (average
12.5 years) with myopia from -1.5 D to -5.0 D and
astigmatism from 0.25 D to 1.25 D. In all patients
central corneal thickness (ultrasonic pachymetry),
corneal radius (automatic keratorefractometer) and
corneal refractive power (corneal topography) was
examined before and after 3 months of ortholenses wear.
Results: In all patients reduction of corneal
refractive power (on average 3.05 D) and increase in
corneal radiuses (on average 0.4 mm) has been observed.
Central corneal thickness has diminished (on average 10
µm).
Conclusion: Orthokeratology reduces myopia due to
changes in corneal curvature which is accompanied by the
reduction in central corneal thickness. |
