| Summary: |
Orthokeratology is a
temporary reduction of myopia by the programmed
application of RGP contact lenses to reshape the cornea.
Modern orthokeratology achieves this using specially
designed reverse geometry gas permeable contact lenses
worn during sleep.
Purpose: The aim of this clinical study is to
determine the effect of Orthokeratology treatment on
patients after wearing the lenses for 6 to 18 months, to
determine the effect of the procedure on myopia
reduction, treatment complications and patient's
satisfaction.
Material and methods: A total number of 146
patients were enrolled in this clinical study, 271 eyes,
67 male and 79 female, age between 9 and 54 years. The
myopia varied from -1.25D to -6.5D, in each patient
baseline examination was performed, then followed by
routine follow-up examinations. We used CKR/Orthokeratology
lens design (Controlled Kerato-Reformation) and
Optivision CornealMap EH 300 Corneal Topographer.
Results: Patients were divided into 3 groups:
group I with spherical equivalent up to -2.75 D (112
eyes), group II between -3.00 D and -4.75D (118 eyes)
and group III between -5.00D and -6.50D (41 eyes). After
CKR/OrthoK treatment and reduction in myopia, group I
ended with an average myopia of -0.18D, group II -0.45D
and group III -0.76D. The mean value of uncorrected
vision acuity after CKR/OrthoK treatment was 1.0 for the
first group, 0.96 for the second group and 0.85 for the
third group. The number of corneal abnormality seen
trough biomicroscopy was: 7% (8 eyes from 112 eyes) in
the first group, 31% (37 eyes from 118 eyes) in the
second group and 63% (26 eyes from 41 eyes) in the third
group. However, patient's satisfaction was very high in
all groups of patients, 98%, 96% and 100%, respectively.
Conclusions: Orthokeratology using the CKR design
is a very effective procedure, with good results of
myopia correction and proven to be safe for myopia up to
-4.75D. |
