| Summary: |
Purpose: To assess
tear film changes prospectively before and after
vitreoretinal surgery.
Patients and methods: 30 eyes of 28 patients aged
24 – 78 years (53.47 mean) undergoing vitreoretinal
surgery were included in the present study. Schirmer I
test, FBUT, LIPCOF assessment of the bulbar conjunctiva,
central corneal thickness as well as corneal topography
were performed prospectively before and three months
after vitreoretinal surgery. Patients complaints were
collected using modified OSDI test.
Results: After the surgery mean FBUT decreased
from 12.73 sec. to 10.63 sec. (p<0.0046), mean LIPCOF
index increased from 0.66 up to 1.23 (p<0.002), and
central corneal thickness decreased from 551 µm to 546
µm (p< 0.024). The relative CIM videotopographic index
increased from 10.91% up to 15.76% yet the difference
did not occurred statistically significant. Schirmer I
average test value remained unchanged and equaled before
and after the surgery: 12.10 mm and 12.93 mm
respectively. The greatest change observed was OSDI
index increase from 5.86 up to 25.24 postoperatively
(p<0.00003).
Conclusions: After the vitreoretinal surgery
precorneal tear film changes are present. They probably
result from conjunctival fibrosis and may be a
significant reasons for patients postoperative ocular
discomfort. |
