| Summary: |
Purpose: The aim of
our study was evaluation of tear film changes after
phacoemulsification in patients with and without
diabetes operated in the Department of Ophthalmology in
Bialystok between June and December 2005.
Material and methods: Studied group comprised 86
patients (38 men and 48 women) at the age from 48 to 83
years. They were divided into two groups: group I – 26
patients with diabetes (aged from 52 to 79, mean
64.3-16.7) and group II – 60 patients without diabetes (aged
from 48 to 83, mean 68.0-17.3). Schirmer test I and II,
tear break-up time, corneal flourescein staining were
measured preoperatively, 1 day, 30 and 120 days
postoperatively.
Results: Patients with diabetes had worse tear
film parameters than patients without. At 1, 30 and 120
days postoperatively the mean tear break-up time was
greatly reduced in two groups, the mean Schirmer test I
and II value increased.
Conclusions: 1. Phacoemulsification decreased
tear film parameters. 2. In patients with diabetes
phacoemulsification is one of the risk factor for
development tear film abnormality. 3. In patients with
dry eye cataract surgery increased the signs. |
