Surgery with Artificial Intraocular Lens Implantation in

| Summary: |
Purpose: To
evaluate the refractive changes after cataract surgery
of different etiology and intraocular lens implantation
in children.
Material and methods: 91 children and adolescents
(47 boys and 44 girls) treated with cataract extraction
and intraocular artificial lens implantation between
2003 and 2005. The average age of patients at the
implantation was 6.75 (from 1.5 to 18 years). SRK II
formula was used to calculate IOL power. The IOL power
ranged from +12.0 to + 30.0 D, mean value was +24.0 D.
Within the next months (first, third, sixth, twelfth)
postoperative examination was performed, and the
refraction changes were recorded. It was performed using
autorefractometer. Statistical records were analyzed
using Microsoft Excel.
Results: The refraction after intraocular lens
implantation during the follow-up was following: after
one month +1.25 D/ -2.0 Dcyl ax 105°, after three months
+0.75 D/ -1.5 Dcyl ax 91°, after six months +0.5 D/ -
1.35 Dcyl ax 90°; and after twelve months 0.25 D/ -1.25
Dcyl ax 87.5°. The final visual acuity was 0.5 on
average (without correction).
Conclusions: The refraction following intraocular
lens implantation changes. These changes are
characterized by component of inverse myopic astigmatism
to axis 90°. It is impossible to predict final optic
power in pseudophakic eye of patients in developmental
age using standard calculation of the intraocular lenses
power. |
