| Summary: |
The aim of the study was
to analyze the influence of the dry eye syndrome on
corneal graft rejection.
Materials and methods: A prospective study has been
conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology of Medical
University of Gdansk since November 2006. 25 patients
(25 eyes) were included in this study (9 men, 16 women)
aged 19-86, who underwent penetrating keratoplasty.
Patients were divided into 3 groups: 1 – without high
risk factors for an endothelial allograft rejection, 2 –
patients classified for keratoplasty due to severe
corneal complications due to dry eye syndrome and 3 –
the rest of the patients. All patients underwent an
ophthalmological examination and typical dry eye
diagnostic tests before corneal transplantation and
three times within the first 6 postoperative months.
Results:. 1 group was composed of 11 eyes, 2 group – 2
eyes, 3 group – 12 eyes. During 6 months follow-up
episodes of corneal graft rejection were observed in 5
patients (3 eyes from 1 group, one from 2 and one from 3
group).
Conclusions: Dry eye syndrome may be important isolated
risk factor for corneal graft failure. Patients should
be informed about this possible complication before
corneal transplantation. Patients with underlying dry
eye should receive special ophthalmological care after
keratoplasty. |
