| Summary: |
Visual changes are common
during pregnancy. Hormones produced during pregnancy may
cause dramatic fluctuations in most women’s refractive
state. Many women develop contact lenses intolerance
during pregnancy. Discomfort is the commonest complaint
associated with contact lenses wear. Other symptoms
include persistent greasing of the contact lenses,
increased lens awareness, reduced wearing time and
ocular irritation.
Corneal thickness and curvature increase and changes in
tear film may be the main factors in contact lenses
intolerance development during pregnancy.
Also other changes i.e conjunctival modification and lid
oedema may also contribute to discomfort with contact
lens wear.
Pregnant women should be advised to reduce wearing time
and choose daily disposable contact lenses if reported
symptoms are mild to moderate. Positive slit lamp
finding and severe symptoms require immediate contact
lens wear discontinuation. |
