| Summary: |
Thyroid diseases affect
eye anatomy and function. The authors present ocular
changes in hyperthyroidism and thyroid orbithopathy and
related complications in contact lens wearers.
Exophthalmos, increased palpebral fissure width and
decreased blink rate (Stellwag sign) lead to dry eye
syndrome and elevated tear film osmolarity. In Graves
ophthalmopathy, autoimmune disease, salivary gland
dysfunction could be also observed, accompanied by
changed tear proteins profile.
Although in severe stages contact lens fitting is
contraindicated, in mild stages proper diagnostic and
therapeutic management enables CL fitting and wearing.
Assessment scores allow to evaluate ocular changes in
thyroid disease course.
On the other hand, therapeutic use of silicone hydrogel
contact lenses could be useful in severe Graves’
ophthalmopathy with ocular surface damage as well as in
case of superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK),
which is often associated with thyroid dysfunction. |
