| Summary: |
Contact lenses for the
refractive error correction are one of the most
effective methods. Despite relatively low incidence of
adverse outcomes, they may be associated with serious
morbidity. Contact lens-related Acanthamoeba keratitis
was relatively rare but the incidence has progressively
increased since then. Such outbreaks may be the result
of lapses in contact lens wear hygiene.
Acanthamoeba keratitis is a sight-threatening infection
of the ocular surface. This disease produces an
exquisite pain and ulceration of the ocular surface. The
reasons for the increase in microbial keratitis
involving species associated with contact lens
infections remain unknown. Possible contributing factors
include poor lens care hygiene (including elimination of
the rubbing step), inadequate lens storage case hygiene
or introduction of new contact lens materials, that may
promote pathogens adherence. Furthermore, there is an
increased demand for cosmetic contact lenses,
particularly among teenage girls, what can contribute to
the number of infected individuals. The regular
follow-up of the contact lenses users and their
education associated with lens storage and disinfection
techniques are essential. These practices should be
endlessly reviewed with patients. It is the only way to
prevent different types of keratitis in contact lens
users. |
