| Summary: |
Aim: To examine the
efficacy of amniotic membrane transplantation with
therapeutic contact lenses application in the treatment
of ocular surface diseases of different etiology in
children.
Materials and methods: Between 2003-2007, total
number of 19 amniotic membrane transplantations in 16
eyes in 15 children were performed. Surgery was
performed under total anesthesia. The amniotic membrane
was implanted with the surface of the epithelium –
basement membrane uppermost (overlay method). Bandage
Therapeutic Silicone Hydrogel contact lens was applied
on the amniotic membrane graft. The silicone hydrogel
bandage contact lenses used were Focus Night & Day.
Contact lens was removed when all the sutures were
removed. Subsequently, the amniotic membrane was
disintegrated. Control examination was performed in 1,
2, 6 week after surgery. Results: Amniotic membrane
transplantation has enhanced epithelialization, the
corneal surface had completely epithelialized. Reduced
inflammation, reduced scaring and cleared of cornea was
obtained.
Conclusions: Amniotic membrane graft with
therapeutic silicone hydrogel contact lens application
is advantageous management in ocular surface diseases in
children. |
